Author contribution:

This important volume of essays is the first of three, all written by specialists on 16th century material culture. Published in conjunction with the transcript of Henry VIII’s 1547 inventory (the most significant document for the study of material culture at the Henrician court), it makes a significant contribution to our understanding of the Tudor court. Hayward’s key research chapter is on clothing, distinctive in focusing on the ageing king. Her second chapter concerns revels and entertainment. The whole volume on textiles demonstrates their cultural and financial significance for illuminating Henry VIII’s reign.
