Additional information

Dielectric ceramics used in microwave communications networks have a key requirement: low dielectric loss. It has always been presumed that grain boundaries contribute to the loss. This paper showed for the first time that this is not the case and therefore is of particular significance industrially. A simple experiment showed that grain boundaries had no effect on loss at room temperature and only a slight effect at low temperatures. Alford was invited to present a plenary at MMA in Slovenia and at PACRIM Australia. Led to EPSRC EP/F035853 and expert witness by Alford in successful £8M industrial IP dispute.
