English abstract

In-depth review of the arguments for and against the recent proposal of Italian art historian, Gianni Papi, that the group of paintings associated with the anonymous early seventeenth-century artist known as ‘The Master of the Judgment of Solomon’ is, in fact, by the young Jusepe de Ribera in his Roman period, prior to moving to Naples in 1616. It introduces many new observations and ideas to this hotly contested debate, and stops short of giving Papi’s thesis unqualified support.
