English abstract

Suggests a new date and early location for Caravaggio’s Annunciation in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Nancy. It also discusses its patronage, and stylistic genesis and influence. It blends stylistic analysis with new historical information about Henry II, Duke of Lorraine’s chapel of St. George in the ducal palace, Nancy, and the devotion of him and his wife, Margherita Gonzaga, to the cult of the Virgin, gleaned from seventeenth-century manuscripts and printed books.
