Originality. This article presents a reflection on a body of creative work carried out during a four year DEL funded PhD. It examines, identifies and provides strategies for overcoming aesthetic concerns relating to the application of models of complexity theory to the creation of art. In particular it highlights concerns with the use of science-based models for the creation of art, addressing issues of mapping metaphors across domains, technological agency and a user’s experience of the work.

Significance.  This article was commissioned by the editors as the author's PhD thesis abstract received the highest ranking by the Leonardo Abstracts Service (LABS) 2011. The article went through the normal peer-review process. This article comments on a number of series of interactive sound installations that were created as part of the PhD process. These sound installations have been exhibited as shown.

Cross-Pollination. Sound Installation. Shown at FIX ’07 International Performance Festival, Catalyst Arts, Belfast. 26th- 29th November, 2007.

Excuse Me. Sound Installation. Shown at ICAD, Conference, Queen Mary University, London. 20th- 23rd June, 2006.

Natural Selection. Sound Installation. Shown at Musica Viva Festival, Portugal. 17th –24th September, 2005.
