Influence of Agro-Ecosystem Modeling Approach on the Greenhouse Gas Profiles of Wheat-Derived Biopolymer Products
This research paper explores the benefit in Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) of taking a site-specific modelling approach for GHG emissions from agricultural production using the case study of a novel starch-polyvinyl alcohol biomaterial. The paper demonstrates clearly that site-specific models offer substantial advantages in terms of uncertainty analysis in LCAs and are preferred over the use of the IPCC Tier 1 approach common in many LCAs. The paper advances our understanding of important agricultural parameters in LCA, has now been applied on ongoing research for the European Commission (in FP7 EnergyPOPLAR) and represents a successful and valuable international scientific collaboration.
