Effects of natural convection on thermal explosion in a closed vessel
This paper proposes a novel way to describe the effect of natural convection on thermal explosion. Previous work had modified the Frank-Kamenetskii and Semenov numbers to account for the presence of convection; however, this new approach separates out the various effects which inhibit explosion, thereby offering far greater physical insight into the problem. This approach can also be straightforwardly modified to account for more complex reactions and flow systems. This paper was promoted as a ‘hot article’ by the journal and was presented at the 8th World Congress of Chemical Engineering (Montreal, 2009) and 4th European Combustion Meeting (Vienna, 2009).
