A new quantitative method for gunshot residue analysis by ion beam analysis
The paper is a collaboration between Surrey, Italian Carabinieri, University of Rome and University of Lausanne – leading Forensics Departments in Europe. Changes in ammunition manufacturing are phasing out the heavy metals on which current forensic GSR analysis is based, and the latest Heavy Metal Free (HMF) primers urgently demand new forensic solutions to seperate them from environmental airborne particles. This demonstrates that IBA has the power to do this. The Italian Carabinieri, in particular, are excited by this technique and are developing the protocols described in the paper to allow the technique to be used in casework.
