Causes and Consequences of Metallic Bridge Failures
The paper presents a classification, based on compilation of data from international literature, for failure consequences of bridges that can be used for the purposes of quantifying their robustness. This classification has been included in a practical guide for robustness that was recently published following the completion of the European COST action TU601: Robustness of Structures and forms background material for standards developed by the Joint Committee on Structural Safety. Moreover, the failure statistics provided within the paper offer useful insights to practising engineers, in terms of quantifying potential hazards for risk-based design and assessment of bridges.
