Mathematical modelling and comparative study of the machining characteristics in ultrasonic-assisted electrical discharge machining of cemented tungsten carbide (WC–10%Co)
The scope of this research is to significantly reduce scrap when machining WC materials using the EDM process. New physical phenomena appearing between the two compound materials, Tungsten and Cobalt, allowed us to derive a new model and, based on this, to reduce cracks and improve product quality. Balancing the energy of the discharge pulses and controlling the density of the energy allowed us to substantially improve the quality of the production. The results were applied on machining extrission moulds for BVG Airtflow Ltd for production of fishing lines with micro features (Richard Wothers - Production Director, Airflo).
