A mathematical model of cartilage regeneration after cell therapy.
This EPSRC-funded study had two important clinical impacts. Firstly, it shows that the number of implanted cells hardly affects the quality of repair. This strengthened our case for allowing a wide range of implanted cell numbers in our chondrocyte and marrow stromal cell MIAIMP (Manufacturer's Authorisation for Investigational Medicinal Products) no. 21276 from the MHRA and in our clinical trial of marrow stromal cells and chondrocytes (EudraCT no. 2010-022072-31). Secondly, it shows a negligible difference in time between repair by implanted chondrocytes and marrow stromal cells. This strengthened the case for equal follow-up times of the arms in the trial.
