Additional information

Catalogue Wyndham Lewis Portraits (London: NPG, 2008) by Paul Edwards, with introductory essay jointly-written by Edwards and Humphreys. ISBN 978185514395. 112 pp.

55 works and cases containing approximately 40 books, magazines and portfolios. Partly based on Edwards’s previous research on Lewis, the exhibition developed a new thesis reconciling Lewis’s modernist formalist practice, the scepticism about identity to which it was related and the idea of modernist portraiture as inherently ‘synthetic’ utterances in a visual language not confined to, but sometimes re-presenting, the European conventions of formal portraiture. The case was made as much by the exhibition itself – selection and juxtaposition of widely divergent portraits of particular sitters – as it was by the catalogue, wall-boards and captions.

Attendance 40,000
