<20>This paper reports the first empircal evaluation of 'kiviat' charts, employed by the UK Government to publish police authority performance data over several years. The importance of this study lies in its demonstration that emergent properties of statistical graphics significantly distort people's judgements, and that (contrary to previous findings) kiviat charts lead to worse performance compared to other graphs. The research resulted in a set of guidlines for interface designers to reduce the detrimental effect of emergent features. JEP:Applied is ranked 15 out of 126 applied psychology journals, has an acceptance rate of 19% and an impact factor of 2.115.
