This work is the product of over 20 years’ research (including tenure of a Munby Fellowship, University of Cambridge, 1995-6). The book was drafted during a study leave in 2010-11, a period which also included entirely new research on Willis’s scientific work, forming chapters 2 and 6, new findings on Willis’s parentage and politics, and substantial additional research on monastic archaeology for chapter 8.
