English abstract

Froissart’s account of his visit to Gaston Febus' court in 1388-9 indicates the count of Foix was a keen connaisseur of French polyphonic songs. This essay explores a series of interrelated songs that sing the praises of this powerful count, which it is proposed here were written for the 1389 wedding of Gaston’s protegée to French prince Jean de Berry. Setting these works within a wider tradition emanating from French princely circles, it argues that citational play served to make partisan political statements but also to underline princely magnificence in more subtle ways.
