Additional information

Biomass is one of few alternatives to fossil-based energy and chemical systems. Designs integrating distributed pyrolysis units converting local lignocellulosic biomass into transportable bio-oil and centralised bio-oil refineries producing platform chemicals are urgently sought. The paper presents the first biorefinery designs for converting the whole tonne of biomass into value added products. This is demonstrated to improve energy security, enhance resource efficiency and sustainability. These objectives have global significance and the potential impact of the paper is very wide, evidenced from this work’s adaptation by MIT, Princeton University, KTH Royal Institute of Technology and many world-leading research groups.
