Comparative Characterisation of 3-D Hydroxyapatite Scaffolds Developed via Replication of Synthetic Polymer Foams and Natural Marine Sponges
The work described represents research into the production of biocompatible bone-substitutes based on biomimetic architectures through the use of marine-sponges and the development of high-solid content/low-viscosity bioactive ceramic slips.
This work led to international collaborations with Professor Patrick Prendergast (TCD), Professor Ruth Wilcox (University of Leeds) and Professor James Kirkpatrick (Johannes Gutenberg University, Germany) and formed the basis for securing follow-on funding from Science Foundation Ireland (Grant 06/IN.1/B86NSs, €62k). Prior to publication the work discussed received ‘Best Presentation’ (2008) and ‘Most Novel use of Materials’ (2008) prizes from the UK Society of Biomaterials and the Institute of Materials respectively.
