Additional information

This is probably the first systematic experimental investigation of three-dimensional and unsteady structures in natural convection flows in inclined cavities. Such flows are relevant to several engineering sectors, including the nuclear sector. The detailed flow and thermal measurements, which include fre4quency spectra of temperature fluctuations, reveal the presence of large-scale three-dimensional structures, not previously reported, quantify their effect on thermal mixing and also provide challenging validation data for CFD codes, for natural convection simulations. The work was partially funded by EDF-Energy (Barnwood), who are now fully funding a PhD study on mixed convection, and formed part Dr Esteifi’s PhD research.
