Multidimensional Pareto optimization of touchscreen keyboards for speed, familiarity and improved spell checking
<20>This paper makes two significant contributions: the use of multi-objective optimisation to assess the performance of novel text-entry layouts on small mobile devices, and the introduction of metrics to handle word ambiguity. Prior to this, all novel text entry methods were optimised for speed alone. Other researchers have already identified multidimentional optimisation as a way to further improve their work (for example Oulasvirta et al), and the first author has extended it to investigate semi-optimised keyboard layouts and optimisation of Arabic keyboards. The paper received an honourable mention award at CHI (judged to be within the top 5% of papers).
