It is the first monograph devoted exclusively to this subject (previous examinations have comprised one or two chapters in more widely-based studies) and is far more detailed in coverage. The work incorporates a substantial amount of previously unpublished and difficult-to-obtain information drawn from primary sources; these are principally newspapers and journals (there are references to over one thousand articles and reviews), the online availability of which has been transformed in the last ten years, and also other archival sources.
