It is the fruit of ten years of research, supported by the Japan Foundation Fellowship as well as the AHRC Research Leave Scheme. It has been nominated for the John K. Fairbank Prize 2009 (AHA) and the John Whitney Hall Book Prize 2011 (Association for Asian Studies) by the Cambridge University Press.
