Numerical investigation of soot reduction potentials with diesel homogeneous charge compression ignition combustion by an improved phenomenological soot model
A phenomenological soot model, optimized and coupled with a reduced chemical mechanism, was implemented into CFD KIVA-3V code. This describes soot formation and oxidation processes in diesel homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) combustion – a new type diesel combustion for low emissions. The first time the soot model has been used for predicting emissions when wide temperature and pressure ranges have to be considered in diesel HCCI combustion. The computational results demonstrate that the improved model is capable of predicting the soot yield, particle diameter, and number density with satisfactory accuracy. This approach leads to designs for cleaner diesel engines.
