Additional information

The practical importance of this research includes the environmental assessment of marine wastewater discharges and geophysical flows including volcanic eruptions and sub-glacial buoyant jets [DOI:10.1061/(ASCE)HY.1943-7900.0000662; DOI:10.1007/s10652-013-9287-2; DOI:10.1016/j.ocemod.2012.12.005]. It was the first study to combine laboratory and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modelling to delineate important mechanisms controlling particulate suspension within two-dimensional buoyant jets and identify their resulting settling and depositional characteristics. In recognition of its contribution, the paper was awarded the 2010 Karl Emil Hilgard Hydraulic Prize by the American Society of Civil Engineers (http://www.asce.org/leadership-and-management/awards/hilgard-prize/).
