Additional information

REWINDItalia aims to address a gap in international historical knowledge, and enhance understanding of the formative years of videoart. The project focuses on the activities of video production and documentation of three centres: the first studio for artist videos, Art/Tapes/22, led by Maria Gloria Bicocchi in Florence 1973 – 1976; Centro Video Arte, a rare example of public sponsored Videoart, which was led by Lola Bonora in Ferrara 1972 – 1994; Galleria del Cavallino based in Venice led by Paolo Cardazzo, produced over one hundred videos shown in international exhibitions, 1974 - 1981.

There is an urgency to this research; many pioneers are already in retirement. Their impact on the history of video as an art form has for too long escaped the recognition that they so unequivocally deserve. The outcomes are intended to promote international interest and a scholarly reassessment of the history of video in the context of contemporary art practices. In order to facilitate international interest the website contents are in English and Italian. The web resource includes: reviews and critical texts on the artists and works, oral testimony, clips and images. A number of seminal texts by leading writers and protagonists are translated into English for the first time: Barilli, Bordini, Cardazzo, Gazzano. A definitive Chronology was researched by Leuzzi (Cronologia della videoarte italiana) and published in "Kinema. Il cinema sulle tracce del cinema" Gazzano 2012. A final publication in 2014 will become a seminal dual language document of videoart from this period. Presentations and papers in English and Italian from the Simposium staged at MACRO (Museum of Contemporary Art Roma), Rome April 19-20th 2012 are also included online. Long-lost works by Lucca Patella have been recovered and re-stored, exhibited Biennale de Venezia. A conference and screening will take place at TATE London, in March 2014.
