Additional information

The Nose was originally commissioned by the Salle de Bains in Lyon, going on to be shown at Cell Projects in London and at Grimm in Amsterdam (for group exhibition Recent British Sculpture). Using Gogol’s story of the same name and Shostakovich’s opera adaptation as emblems for the project, the work explored the jarring absurdity of the former and the performance history and scenography of the latter. By combining cement wall reliefs with rubber objects the environment alludes to the cartoon-like aftermath of a rehearsal where music stands are left drooping towards the floor and The Nose has left the building.

After the two solo exhibitions the project went on to be included in Recent British Sculpture. The exhibition curated by Tom Morton (Hayward Gallery) assembled works by young artists working predominantly with sculpture. The title of the show is a nod to British Council touring exhibitions of the sixties and seventies and as such the artists involved all have practices that engage with conceptual histories associated with British sculpture of this period. The catalogue extends and articulates this theme.

In Lyon the exhibition formed the basis of two panel discussions on radio RDV and received a review in Liberation. At the same time Peter was interviewed by art magazine Zero Deux about the exhibition as well as his practice in a wider sense. This eventually became the main feature in the edition and a new drawing was used as the cover image. In London the exhibition received a review in Art Review and Peter received his first Arts Foundation nomination for it.
