English abstract

This article examines participation of Muslims in France and Britain in the European Social Forums. What is most significant is the effect it had on social movements and how it challenged their own self-interpretation as open and tolerant. The most obvious result has been the series of debates, disagreements and splits caused within the existing groups of the ‘global justice movement’. The participation was also divisive for organisations representing Muslims and coalitions between Muslim and non-Muslim activists have been hard to maintain. The differing reactions to this phenomenon can be explained by the ‘discursive opportunity structures’ found in each context.
