One pot direct hydrothermal growth of photoactive TiO2 films on glass
The paper established that photocatalytic, high quality titania films can be produced by a low temperature, single stage process using non-toxic precursors, contrary to most other methods, which use toxic compounds with corrosive by-products. Use of non-toxic precursors is an important environmental issue. Since publication of this paper research has developed to show these films have highly non-linear optical properties [doi: 10.1016/j.tsf.2009.02.154] and low absorbance values making them suitable for optical glasses and photocatalytic [doi: 10.1016/j.solidstatesciences.2009.05.014] so suitable for self-cleaning surfaces such as windows. The deposition process has been expanded to include other commercially important oxides [doi: 10.1016/j.matchemphys.2010.06.040, doi: 10.1021/am200519w].
