Additional information

This work, which was a collaboration with an experimental group at the University of Hamburg, used a novel combination of world leading atomic scale imaging with state-of-the-art computational modelling to determine the exact adsorption configuration of a small metal-organic complex on a bulk insulating surface. This work represents a seminal development in the atomic scale imaging of surfaces, enabling the complete determination of the structure of an adsorbed molecule on an insulating substrate for the first time. This approach has significant implications for atomic and molecular scale technologies as well as offering direct insights into basic chemistry.
