Additional information

A wholly novel method for measuring disbond growth using a surface-mounted chirped fibre Bragg grating sensor is described. For this demonstration, quite unusually, three types of linked observations were required for modeling and understanding the results as a consequence of the complex nature of the strain field near the crack tip in a double-cantilever beam test on a unidirectional composite material. Many applications in mechanical and civil engineering will require surface bonding of these sensors, so this paper is the proof-of-concept demonstration that such applications are possible.
