This commissioned article is based on a paper delivered by Greg McLaughlin to an invitation-only symposium, Fragile Peace in an Age of Austerity, Birkbeck College, 14 October 2011. The authors worked jointly on the subsequent article. Their analysis is a synthesis of McLaughlin’s sociological and Baker’s cultural studies perspectives. With a focus on the role and political economy of the local news media in post-devolution Northern Ireland, the article also develops and advances the critical arguments presented in the authors’ earlier book, The Propaganda of Peace (2010).
