Additional information

<28>Originality: Closely combines experiments and modelling to provide a simple explanation for insect flight control under multimodal conditions.

Significance: Represents an important acceptance by the leading journal in experimental biology of a modelling paper from an informatics group. It has been a key publication breakthrough to obtain mainstream recognition in this form of the contribution made by our behavioural and robotic modelling methodology.

Rigour: A 3D tracking system for free-flying Drosophila was implemented and the trajectories analysed to extract key characteristics. Detailed modelling of visual reflex modulation by olfactory input revealed a minimal model able to account for the data.
