Additional information

This paper was a key part of the case made in the Kepler NASA Senior Review proposal 2011 for to extend data collection beyond the nominal prime mission. It presents results on Kepler data that demonstrate that stars in the Kepler field-of-view are intrinsically noisier than expected, making detection of small planets more challenging. Chaplin led work on producing simulations of the Kepler targets, to support results from the real data.
