Additional information

The use of toughened zirconia has always been limited by hydrothermal degradation, causing mechanical collapse (e.g. cause of high failure rates in zirconia hip prostheses). This paper reports, for the first time, a novel material design concept that dramatically reduces the degradation kinetics, without reducing toughness. This approach has been validated through recent research at Leuven, Belgium (JEurCeramSoc) and at INSA Lyon (Chevalier:jeromechevalier@me.com). This will impact on material design in the zirconia dental market (~1 million implants p.a.), and we are already in discussion on new ceramic compositions with CeramTec (s.french@ceramtec.de).
