Additional information

The Walk On exhibition and catalogue, co-curated by Collier, was based upon extensive research of a number of archives and diverse artistic practice to bring together a survey, from the late 1960s to the current day, that reflects the breadth and diversity of practice by artists whose work is informed or inspired by travelling on foot.

Examining forms of practice including land art, conceptual art, street photography, to the essay-film, a wealth of leading international artists have created their work from the act of walking, in the city or the land.

The exhibition premiered at the Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art, Sunderland (1 June – 31 August 2013) and will tour in 2014 (Art Circuit Touring Exhibitions) to the MAC Birmingham; The Atkinson, Southport; and Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery. A selection of the exhibition was shown at PM Gallery and House, London (26 March – 5 May 2013).

The supporting catalogue Walk On: From Richard Long to Janet Cardiff, 40 Years of Art Walking (2013) (a 150-page pub. AEN ISBN 978-1-906832-08-7) is edited by Collier and includes his essay ‘On Ways of Walking and Making Art.’

Walk On was supported by Arts Council England through Grants for the arts, Visual Arts in Rural Communities and partners with the extended engagement programme supported by the Leader+ EU programme.
