Fatal and major construction accidents: a comparison between Scotland and the rest of Great Britain
This paper reports findings of HSE project CRR: 443 (£200,000). The paper was considered outstanding by the CIB W099 technical & scientific committee. The author was workpakage PI for construction and gave expert guidance and direction to the team’s statisticians. The findings were significant because prior to publication it was believed that Scottish construction workers suffered greater risk of fatal and major accidents. The findings allowed better allocation of Government resources for inspection and intervention (http://www.hse.gov.uk/aboutus/meetings/hseboard/2011/280911/psept1160.pdf see Annex 1 Para 3). The methods provide a framework for other international comparisons.
