Additional information

A chemical and biochemical engineer, microbiologist and physical chemist collaborated on this study of the structure of surfactin and its micelles. These structures, the first to be determined by neutron reflectometry of surfactin, are important because they explain the molecule's extraordinarily high surface activity and biological activity such as stimulation of immune-related responses in plant tissue. Our value for the micellar aggregation number (~20) is supported by molecular modelling (She, A-Q et al. J. Phys. Chem. B 2012 116 12735).
