This is based on research in a considerable body of archival material over about 15 years, most notably in China, where the sources were practically and at times politically difficult to access, and the UK, and encompasses a wide range of topics and themes. It took the best part of two uninterrupted years to write (word length: text, 155k; notes 30k). Work on the largest archive in China had to be preceded by funding and curating the creation by the institution of a catalogue of the 58,000 items held.
