This book is based almost exclusively on a very wide range of unpublished sources from former Soviet archives (state documents from party and Komsomol sources, secret service files, personal archives of writers, artists, politicians, court papers, economic and statistical data, cinema, literature and interviews) which are hard to trace and take a long time to retrieve. The book is the result of roughly three years of archival work in Russia and Ukraine. The collection of such a diverse body of sources and their contextualisation in several historical frameworks is an act that might be a once-in-a-lifetime book.
