Accessibility, Urban Design and the Whole Journey Environment
This article presents findings from EPSRC grants (2004-10) EP/E040764/1 & GR/S90867/01 [Evans PI] Accessibility & User Needs in Transport for Sustainable Urban Environments (AUNT-SUE) under the Social Inclusion & Urban Design theme. The Scoping study was judged to be of ‘Outstanding Benefit to Society’ (EPSRC). Primary research was undertaken in test beds in Camden and Hertfordshire including design quality audits, participant observation, GIS-Participation and 2D/3D modelling techniques. It developed new benchmarks for accessibility (improving on inadequate standards used by government /transport authorities) and a suite of GIS-based design and visualisation tools (Street Design and Environmental Audits). These have subsequently been adopted in accessibility design & planning guidance by Transport for London, local councils and the Canadian Age Friendly Communities initiative.
