Crang co-designed the project with the other editors; worked jointly with the other editors to identify chapter authors; was sole author of chapter 21; was involved in editing all thirty-two chapters, but had special responsibility for overseeing chapters 8, 16, 18, 19, 20, 22, 24, 25, 29, 30, and the epilogue; co-compiled the select bibliography; assembled the notes on contributors; wrote and submitted a successful grant application to the Carnegie Trust for £2,000 to cover the costs of including colour illustrations in the volume; sourced many of the 148 black and white and 26 colour illustrations; and was responsible for composing the list of illustrations, the insertion of the illustrations alongside the text, devising the captions to the illustrations, producing the illustration credits, and collecting copyright permissions for all illustrations.
