Additional information
Apart from the interest in the novel method, this research has implications for polymer substrate surface modification in flexible electronics. This work has led to the use of AlN as a dielectric underlayer for gold busbars in flexible displays, allaying fears that formation of an oxide layer would prevent adhesion of gold or lead to failure in the field. This allows users to dispense with the normal gold adhesion layer of chromium or titanium, which requires an additional etching step. This has been used by Plastic Logic Ltd in the manufacture of flexible displays.
