Additional information

The possibility of a low noise, high bandwidth optical amplification technique was shown by designing and characterising a new type of ultra-long laser. This was the first experimental characterisation of the optimal amplification power profile for telecommunications. The work showed how this could be realised in practice. This initial research led to 12 further international conference and 5 journal publications in the fields of optical communications and fibre lasers, most notably Nature Photonics DOI: 10.1038/NPHOTON.2010.4 (co-authored with Prof Sergei Turitsyn included in his REF submissions), which developed further the experimental distributed amplification techniques.
