Additional information
This paper was considered by the editor to have been timely as it appeared before the introduction of the UK feed-in-tariff and renewable heat incentive. Real data was welcomed against manufacturer data to give performance, resource and cost comparisons for microgeneration technologies and challenged the assertions about the unpredictability of solar insolation. In 2011 the paper was recognised by the Institution of Civil Engineers as the best research paper in all the ICE journals and was awarded the prestigious Baker Medal. We have been asked to write a book based on the paper.
