Integration of remote sensing data and surface observations to estimate the impact of the Russian wildfires over Europe and Asia during August 2010
<27> The key question is which information should be used for analysis and how to integrate the multisource information to increase our understanding of the relationship between biomass burning episodes and their effects. In July 2010 wildfires around Moscow, Russia produced an extremely hazy area. This study analysed this haze and its transport trajectory using an Optimal Smoothing (OS) scheme with AOD images retrieved from MODIS and CALIPSO data as well as ground-based PM2.5 data. The OS method helps account for the uncertainty inherent in the model selection process (something that traditional statistical analysis often neglects).
