This article is based on current ESRC funded research [RES -062-23-2241 Governing By Inspection: School Inspection and Education Governance in Scotland, England and Sweden] and focuses on findings from the first stage of this project, that mapped and analysed the growth of inspectorates in Europe. It is a successor to and continues the argument made in an earlier paper in Comparative Education [National policy brokering and the construction of the European Education Space in England, Sweden, Finland and Scotland Grek et al 2009] that is listed in the Journals most cited category.
