Abandoning America : Life-stories from early New England
The fruit of extensive and complex research over three decades to identify New England settlers from the 1630s who returned home, 1640-1660, during England’s Civil Wars and Interregnum. The numbers are significant and striking: one in two Harvard graduates, one in three clerics, perhaps one in four settlers overall. As no passenger lists survive, hundreds of individuals have been identified by research on both sides of the Atlantic, their lives reconstructed from manuscript evidence in twenty-five archives and from numerous primary printed texts. The book includes a substantial introduction to present critical insights from the research.
