Winckelmann and the invention of antiquity: history and aesthetics in the age of Altertumswissenschaft
This monograph of 107, 000 words represents more than six years' research and writing. It comprises seven main chapters of 9000 - 16000 words each, each of which could have formed the basis of an individual publication. It uses archival material in French, German and Latin gathered on research trips to Germany and France over a number of years, contemporary scholarship in several modern languages and innovative methodological approaches from the history of science. Collection and analysis of the substantial body of material it contains was assisted by £24,739 in funding from the British Academy and the Leverhulme Trust.
