Additional information

The translation arose out of Carter's research on 1930s film theory for her previous monograph, 'Dietrich's Ghosts'. Carter approached Berghahn to publish the translation, and raised ca. £5000 in translation funds from the AHRC, the Kraszna-Krausz Foundation, and Screen. She commissioned the translation from Prof Livingstone, worked with him on a glossary of terms, substantially revised the first draft of the translation, and added extensive editorial footnotes comparing the early texts with Balazs's later 'Theory of the Film' (1953). Her sole-authored Introduction arose out of original archival research at the Balazs archive in MTAK, Budapest, as well as at the British Film Institute and National Film Museum.
