Double-weighted statement

Changing France meets the first four criteria for double-weighted research output. It examines literary and non-literary texts produced during the Second Empire in the context of key areas of material culture, and against a background of political change. In particular this involved identifying and analyzing an extensive body of material relating to five quite disparate areas: exhibitions, transport, food, photography, costume, and ruins. The argument is almost entirely based on primary sources including not only novels, plays and poems but also many obscure guidebooks and instruction manuals consulted in the UK and abroad; it reflects ten years of research.
