A sensor for the detection and measurement of thin dielectric layers using reflection of frequency scanned millimetric waves
This is a novel paper that showed, for the first time, that layers of dielectric material (for example a suicide vests containing no fragmentation) can be effectively detected by radar type techniques operating at millimetre waves. Prior to the publication of this paper, it was thought difficult or impossible to do so from an effective standoff range. The paper led to considerable subsequent grant income for the PI and his group of over £2M. The work resulted from a lengthy collaboration between the University of Manchester and MMU and has been the subject of an associated impact case study.
